Habitats are homes

Students investigate different habitats to discover their importance and learn about how all living things are connected.

Minibeasts – features, classification and life cycles (Prep to Year 4)

Explore the external features that define various minibeasts and dive into the scrub to investigate the diversity of arthropods within Brisbane's reserves.

Creek discovery (Years 4 to 6)

Exploring our local creek environments, students examine how local catchments support the lives of people and other living things.

Mangrove Discovery (Years 4 to 6)

Students are led on a guided exploration of the new environment centre.  Alternatively, the guided walk can be conducted at Nudgee Beach foreshore. 

This program can be adapted for the following year levels:

  • Year 4 – Life cycles. Living things & their environment 
  • Year 5 – Adaptations
  • Year 6 – Physical conditions of environments

Guided Bushwalk (Prep to Year 6)

An experienced educator will guide your group on a walk through the reserve adjoining one of our centres. The educator will tailor the walk to the focus needs of your group. The walk can be combined with a self-guided exploration of the Visitor Centre at the reserve.

Cost: $135 per group
Duration: One hour
Session size: 15 to 30 students

 

Bush Neighbours (Year 4)

This initiative teaches students about the importance of conserving natural habitats, keeping bushland and waterways free from pollution and creating wildlife-friendly gardens. Through tailored sessions with Council educators, students learn about native wildlife and connect with their local reserve. 

Cost: Free (for all year 4 classes)

Creek discovery (Year 7 and 9)

Examining our local creek environments, students explore how local catchments support the lives of people and other living things and how humans impact these environments.

Cost: $9 per student
Duration: Two hours

Mangrove Ecology (Years 7 and 9)

Students learn how important mangrove forests are for marine life and the part they play in a complex food web.

Cost: $9 per student

Creek catchment assessments (Years 9, 10 and 12)

Students learn about creek catchments and gain a practical understanding of how human activity can impact water quality and biodiversity. Students compare the health of two sites by measuring water quality (including pH, phosphates, nitrates, dissolved oxygen, salinity and turbidity) and assessing riparian vegetation.

Surveying and Sampling Habitats (Year 11 and 12)

Students learn sampling and surveying techniques to investigate species diversity and abiotic and biotic factors which impact and shape ecosystems.

Cost: $18 per student
